FMP coverage in the UK
The UK is a fully covered FMP country. The NHS provides universal coverage to UK residents, but FMP is separate and covers your service-connected conditions specifically — including private specialist care that NHS wait times might delay. Many veterans use FMP to access private consultations for service-connected conditions, making private care essentially reimbursable for those conditions.
FMP + NHS — how they work together
- Use the NHS for non-service-connected conditions as a UK resident (free at point of use).
- For service-connected conditions, use either NHS or a private provider (FMP reimbursement) — many use FMP where private access is faster.
- Register for FMP regardless. Complete VA Form 10-7959f-1; it's free and gives you a reimbursement pathway.
- RAF Lakenheath & Mildenhall. Retired veterans with ID cards may access base medical facilities on a space-available basis — contact the base TRICARE service center to confirm.

Private London clinics — world-class private facilities; private consultant appointments for service-connected conditions are reimbursable under FMP and far faster than NHS waits.
Suffolk — near bases
Nuffield Health & BMI Healthcare — national private hospital networks near RAF Lakenheath and Mildenhall.
Nationwide
NHS — register with a local GP as a UK resident; free at point of use. Use NHS for non-service-connected conditions, FMP for service-connected specialist care where speed matters.
RAF Lakenheath
48th Medical Group — US military facility; retired veterans with valid ID cards may access on a space-available basis. Confirm with the TRICARE service center.
C&P exams in the UK
VA contractor C&P exams are available, primarily around London and major US installations. The UK's significant US military and veteran community generally means more straightforward scheduling than smaller European countries. Wait times are typically 2–3 months.
Practical tips
- Update your VA address. Give VA your exact UK address (1-800-827-1000), or VA may schedule you back in the US.
- Scheduling. Exams are primarily in the London area; from Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland you may need to travel.
- Defense contractors. Contractor status doesn't affect VA eligibility from prior military service.
